Nerve testing

An electromyogram (EMG) is a test primarily used to monitor electrical activity of a muscle. A small needle is placed on the muscles to be tested usually done in chronic cases to determine the level of nerve root involvement. It is also a useful tool for distinguishing between nerve root disease and muscle disease.

A consultation for back pain may not necessarily involve the above diagnostic tests as back pains are usually self-remitting. Pain management may be resolve generally through pain medications and corrective postural measures. But it is always safe to seek medical check-up in cases of chronic pain as it could indicate a more serious underlying causative factor resulting to back pain. And the above-mentioned tests are useful tools in diagnosing what actually causes the chronic pain.
