As more and more people became interested in the idea of promoting themselves through social networking, more sites popped up to cater to their needs. People went ahead and created profiles for themselves in classic sites such as epinions.com, classmates.com, and the famous friendster.com.
The actual functions that these sites had in the social networking view were quite substantial for a good number of people surfing the internet. However, there is one social networking site which stands out among the rest as of today. This is the online social networking service which many people know around the world as MySpace.
MySpace is known by many to hold the biggest social network in history. As of September 2007, it was declared that there were roughly 200 million accounts for people and various groups on MySpace. The site does not hold back in saying that it makes an average of around 200,000 MySpace accounts in a day.
MySpace actually started out in August 2003 as a project initiated by employees working for eUniverse (now known as Intermix). The goal of this project was to beat out other competitors in attracting other users into its social networks. Serving as an entry in contests held by eUniverse, the very first people who signed up for a MySpace account were employees for the said company.
Various executives and project leaders who represented eUniverse saw the potential of MySpace in moving to the top of the mountain of the many social networking websites. The company devoted resources in developing and promoting the site. Since eUniverse already had some 20 million users and customers during the time, it was not very difficult for them to promote MySpace to the public.
As more and more people joined MySpace, a lot of people were also involved in ensuring the stability and integrity of the site. The advertising power which this site could harness was realized by bigger corporations, and eventually Fox Interactive Media acquired both MySpace and its parent company eUniverse for a little more than half a billion dollars. MySpace is currently headquartered over at Beverly Hills, and it is quite close to Fox Interactive.
The format of MySpace profiles contain many fields where users can key in as much personal information as they would want to divulge. Users can make use of these fields to inform the rest of the world about them, and who they would want to meet in MySpace.
Fellow MySpace users can post comments for each other, much like other famous social networking websites. This has and still proves to be one of the many reasons why people have been attracted to social networking websites in the first place. Groups who represent themselves in an account in MySpace have also appreciated the opportunity for them to upload as much as 4 to 5 music tracks as part of their profiles.
MySpace also has many other features which users tend to utilize. The ability to post bulletins has been used by many to notify other people in their entire network regarding events and other sorts of information. MySpace also introduced MySpace IM, its own instant messenger dedicated for its members. Members who are also YouTube enthusiasts can also post videos in MySpaceTV, and people who are on the go can also receive updates among other things through MySpace Mobile.
The smart distribution of resources from its beginnings has undoubtedly made MySpace what it is today. It has literally gone beyond just being a social networking service to many of its members.
